Pantoprazole 40 mg injection is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) formulation used to reduce gastric acid secretion in medical settings where oral administration is not possible or practical. It is typically supplied as a lyophilized powder in a vial and must be reconstituted with sterile diluent before intravenous use. The injection is administered either as a slow IV bolus or as an infusion, depending on clinical need and institutional protocols.

This medication works by blocking the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system in the gastric parietal cells, leading to significant suppression of acid production. Pantoprazole 40 mg injection is commonly used in hospitalized patients for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. It is also frequently used to prevent stress-related mucosal damage in critically ill patients when oral therapy is contraindicated.

The IV form is particularly useful in patients who are vomiting, unable to swallow, or receiving nothing by mouth (NPO). After stabilization, patients are usually transitioned to an oral PPI. Pantoprazole injections are generally well tolerated, with possible side effects including headache, diarrhea, nausea, or reactions at the injection site. It should be used under appropriate medical supervision.
