Moxifloxacin 0.5% w/v Eye Drops are a sterile ophthalmic antibiotic preparation used to treat bacterial eye infections, particularly bacterial conjunctivitis. Moxifloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly responsible for eye infections.

Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes such as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. By blocking these enzymes, the medication stops bacterial growth and helps eliminate the infection. Because it is applied directly to the eye, it delivers rapid local action with minimal systemic absorption.

These eye drops are commonly prescribed for symptoms such as eye redness, discharge, irritation, watering, and swelling caused by bacterial infections. They are not effective against viral or fungal eye conditions. The drops are usually administered several times a day for a prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve early, to ensure complete eradication of bacteria.

Moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops are generally well tolerated. Mild side effects may include temporary burning, stinging, dryness, or blurred vision immediately after application. Patients should avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination and should not wear contact lenses during active infection unless advised by a doctor. Use should always follow medical guidance.
